Assistance when arriving at Schiphol
Are you landing at Schiphol and do need assistance? If you received assistance at the airport you departed from, you’ll also get help at Schiphol. From stepping off the plane until you leave Schiphol, you’re in good hands. Below is a step-by-step plan so you know what to expect.
Step 1: Getting off the plane
When your plane has landed and arrived at the gate, stay in your seat. All the other passengers will get off the plane first. In the event you leave with the other passengers, we might not be able to find you. The assistant will come on board to help you out of your seat in peace and safety. If you need a wheelchair, we use a special one that fits in the aisle. You’ll get into a regular wheelchair after you’ve gotten off the plane. If you only want to use your own wheelchair, let your airline know when requesting assistance. That way your airline can ensure that your wheelchair is waiting for you at the plane door. You enter the terminal using the passenger bridge.
If your aircraft is not parked next to a passenger bridge, you can (if possible) leave the plane using the stairs. The assistant will help you. If you cannot walk down stairs, we’ll take you down from the plane in a mobile lift or ambulift. We’ll then drive you to the terminal in our wheelchair bus.
Step 2: Getting to the arrival hall
Once you’re in the terminal you’ll meet the assistant who will guide you to your next flight, on your journey through the airport or to the exit. You can receive assistance in your own wheelchair, or on foot. You can also go in a caddy. This is an electric cart that is often shared with other travellers. Your assistant helps you get in and out, and stays with you. If you have a travel companion, they will only be able to go with you in the caddy if there’s enough space. In case there isn’t any space, your assistant will arrange a place to meet your travel companion later.
Travelling outside of the Schengen Zone? Then the next stop will be passport control, where the Royal Dutch Marechaussee checks your passport. After that, you’ll go to the baggage hall.
Step 3: Collect your baggage
The assistant guides you to the right baggage belt and helps you collect your checked bags. To pick up your wheelchair or another mobility aid, go to odd-size baggage. The passenger assistant will be happy to help you with this.
Step 4: Getting to the exit
From the baggage hall you make your way to the arrival hall, first going through customs. Here, you’re already on the ground floor and your assistance can help you get to the trains, buses and taxis via Schiphol Plaza, or you can go here on your own. Did you come by car and do you need assistance to get to the car park? Let your assistant know. If you are staying at a hotel at Schiphol, we can take you to the hotel shuttle bus.
