Jointly developing innovations to increase the speed with which we are making airports and the aviation sector more sustainable. That’s the goal of TULIPS, a collaboration of 31 parties led by Royal Schiphol Group that was launched in 2022. TULIPS’ activities include testing facilities for electrically charging aircraft and hydrogen-powered ground handling vehicles, and conducting pilots to capture ultrafine particles produced by departing planes.
Schiphol is the testing ground for no fewer than 17 TULIPS projects. In addition to airports, airlines, knowledge institutions and sector partners are all taking part in this collaborative project.
As well as Schiphol, the airports of Oslo, Turin and Larnaca are also testing grounds for the innovations. All four operate under very different conditions. This means that the impact of the innovations on airports and climate goals can be properly identified. The acquired knowledge and results of the pilots are shared with other European airports and the aviation industry. And this information may be used by all parties. TULIPS is a Royal Schiphol Group initiative. It received a 25 million euro subsidy from the European Commission.
