We do the scheduling of maintenance on our runways together with many other parties and it is a complex process. Various interests are involved; from operations, engineering and our local environment. In working together, we seek an optimal balance between the impact on our local residents, the aviation sector and the technical feasibility of the work.
Together with various partners, we have defined how we carry out runway maintenance. This is described in detail in the Runway Maintenance Strategy and consists of several documents. In this summary, you can read the most important information.
Schiphol maintains the six runways in accordance with the Runway Maintenance Strategy that was adopted and subsequently implemented in 2018. For each runway, the strategy sought the optimal balance between the interests of internal and external stakeholders in relation to the technical feasibility of activities. An evaluation took place in 2024.
According to the Runway Maintenance Strategy, one runway undergoes major maintenance every year. This is necessary to carry out large-scale work. We have drawn up a multi-year schedule for this:
2023: Zwanenburgbaan 2024: Kaagbaan 2025: Buitenveldertbaan 2026: No runway undergoing major maintenance 2027: Schiphol-Oostbaan Runway 2028: Polderbaan 2029: Aalsmeerbaan
