When fuel is burned in aircraft and diesel engines, ultrafine particles are created. This is a type of fine dust with particles smaller than 0.1 micrometres. These particles are so small that you cannot see them. They can reach deep into the lungs and even end up in the bloodstream.
There are indications that exposure to ultrafine particles can have adverse effects on the cardiovascular system and respiratory conditions. However, we do not yet know exactly how often and how much airport employees inhale ultrafine particles. There is also no official limit value to indicate the amount of ultrafine particles that is considered safe.
Schiphol is therefore conducting research into ultrafine particles. The aim is to better understand how it affects employees. With this knowledge, we can take more effective measures to reduce exposure and make the working environment healthier. We are also working on new ideas to reduce ultrafine particles at the airport.
