The new Pier A is expected to be ready for operation in April 2027. Over the past few months, we have been collaborating with new contractor BAM Bouw en Techniek on a precise schedule. BAM will continue to work on, and complete, this project over the coming years.
After a period of careful preparation and extensive repair works, BAM and its subcontractors are going to finish the construction of Pier A. The intention is to finish the pier in December 2026. After that, all the new systems need to be operationally tested, and hundreds of colleagues and airport partners will be learning how to work in the new environment. This will take a few months.
The current schedule is highly detailed and contains buffer periods (every weekend and during holidays) in order to catch up after any delays or resolve potential unforeseen circumstances. In the period up to now, BAM, together with Heijmans, VolkerWessels Infra Schiphol and others, has remedied many quality defects. For example, the fire-resistant coating for the steel beams proved so affected by weathering that BAM had to replace the coating on some 18 kilometres of beams.
With its additional square metres, spacious layout, sustainable elements, and new facilities and gates, Pier A will soon provide the extra quality and comfort that Schiphol wants to offer passengers and airlines. The extra square metres and eight gates, three of which are for the largest types of aircraft, are necessary to meet current and future peak time demands. Pier A is of crucial importance to the future of the airport as it will provide the space to replace and renovate existing airport infrastructure, as well as make it more sustainable.
Covering an area of 55,000 square metres, the new pier almost resembles a terminal. There will be security filters, border checkpoints, shops and catering establishments. And with three floors, it will be possible to keep travellers with varying border and security statuses apart. Throughout the completion, Schiphol is upholding its sustainability goals and LEED Gold certification so that Pier A becomes Schiphol's most sustainable pier.
