Introduction of Entry/Exit System postponed

The Ministry of Justice and Security has announced that the EU is postponing the introduction of the European Entry/Exit System (EES). In addition, the European Commission is exploring the possibility of a phased implementation of EES, with a limited start. The implementation date was scheduled for 10 November 2024.

What is EES again?

The Automatic Entry/Exit System (EES) is a digital system that will largely replace passport stamps across Europe. Instead, non-EU residents will have to register electronically with a passport scan, fingerprints and facial scan upon arrival in Schengen. The system then keeps track of entry and exit details.

New date and approach

The Ministry of Justice and Security reports, ‘Despite all efforts, EES will not enter into force on 10 November 2024. Instead, the European Commission is exploring the possibility of a phased implementation with a limited start of EES. Member states and eu-LISA (the EU's IT administrator - ed.) have expressed their support for such an approach. The details of this approach will be determined in the coming weeks.’

Pending the new date and approach, ongoing preparations at Schiphol continue as usual. This includes the installation of registration kiosks.
