This artwork is created by visual and graphic artist Farida Sedoc (1980). 'To make something that would calm both myself and the viewer, I revisited my connection with textiles: sitting behind a sewing machine and sewing pieces of fabric together gives me great peace of mind.'
The different layers in this textile collage communicate with each other. The colorful patchwork consists of repeating patterns that form a powerful image together. 'I wanted the work to give the impression that you can get close enough to touch it. By zooming in close, I wanted to maximize this sense of tactility.'
The patchwork is also inspired by community life. The pieces of old fabric sewn together symbolize care and connection, and new generations building on the legacy of the past.
As an interdisciplinary artist, Sedoc creates screen prints, posters, and t-shirts, among other things. Her work explores how people and circumstances continually influence each other with recurring themes like the exchange of goods, money, knowledge, and culture.
Farida Sedoc grew up in Amsterdam and studied at the Sandberg Institute. Her work has been exhibited at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, among other places.
