A lot of hard work has been carried out over the past months as part of the major maintenance on the Kaagbaan Runway. It will soon be as good as new, with a fresh layer of asphalt. In order to use this new asphalt safely and efficiently, we first need to sweep and vacuum the runway. These activities will be conducted over the next few days. Read more about these works here.
The top layer of asphalt is made up of granular material. When aircraft take off and land, the friction of the wheels cause the granules to loosen. This is normal for this kind of asphalt.
It is important to remove this granular material every day using a special kind of sweep and vacuum machine. In addition, we always test whether the top asphalt layer meets all the requirements.
The Kaagbaan Runway cannot be used while these works are going on. To limit nuisance as much as possible, we are doing this work at night.
There will be four consecutive days of works after the official completion day. After that we will sweep and vacuum three times every other night, and then another five times every three nights. Measurements are taken every time after sweeping has taken place. This will be used to determine whether the following planned work will go ahead and with what duration.
