Traffic to and from Schiphol is becoming increasingly environmentally friendly. Schiphol Taxi has run a large fleet of 100% electric taxis since 2014, and 100 electric buses began carrying public transport passengers around Schiphol in March 2018. We use channels such as the Schiphol website to encourage travellers to arrive by public transport, and we have installed extra charging stations in various areas to promote the use of electric vehicles.
All the official taxis at Schiphol (around 700) have been electric since 2014, with only the buffer – the waiting area for other taxi firms – still occasionally being supplemented with non-electric vehicles.
Schiphol included electric vehicles as a condition of awarding the contract for bus transportation in the Amstel-Meerlanden region, with the result that, since March 2018, 100 electric buses now carry passengers through the airport and around the local area. This is the largest electric bus fleet in Europe. The electric fleet will be further expanded in 2021 to reach a total of no fewer than 258 electric buses. Schiphol installed and financed the charging infrastructure for the buses at the airport.
With sustainability in mind, we prefer travellers not to be brought to the airport or picked up in fossil fuel-powered cars – but electric cars and motorbikes are more than welcome. Schiphol is demonstrating its support for electric vehicles by installing even more charging points.
Schiphol has been promoting the airport’s great public transport links to travellers for some years now. A significant proportion of travellers already use public transport, with almost 50% travelling by bus or train.
