The Schiphol Major Maintenance project (Groot Onderhoud Schiphol) is taking place simultaneously with the MHS project. As of 2023, this project will involve a number of periods when there are no trains and when the train platforms at Schiphol Airport station are out of use. NS will use replacement transport (buses) during these periods. NS will use the temporary bus station, located at the end of Koepelstraat, which will be ready in the second half of 2022. The construction of the bus station is part of the MHS Preparatory Activities Forecourt sub-project.
In consultation with the Amsterdam Transport Authority, ProRail and NS, it has been decided that the temporary bus station will consist of two stops for alighting and four stops for boarding. When operational, we will see whether this system should be maintained or whether changes will be made.
We are able to limit disruptions to travellers as much as possible by efficiently combining projects. The MHS Train Platforms sub-project will take advantage of the period when there are no trains running (due to the Major Maintenance Schiphol project). By carrying out work during these periods, train passengers experience fewer disruptions. At times when there are no trains are running, major work will be carried out on the stairs and escalators to the platforms.
During the period of works in the Schiphol tunnel, tracks, sleepers and overhead wires will be renewed in both tunnel tubes. In the oldest tunnel tube, asbestos-containing materials that were used during the construction of the tunnel in the 1980s will be safely removed.
