ProRail has commissioned contractor BAM Infra Nederland to construct three new fixed staircases between the bus platform and the rail platforms at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. The project is designed to streamline the flow of rail passengers and minimise congestion on Schiphol Plaza. Work will start in April 2025 and is due for completion in the summer of 2026. On 29 November, BAM and ProRail officially signed the contract for the execution of this project, which forms part of Schiphol’s Multimodal Hub.
The three new staircases will offer passengers a direct route from the rail platforms to the bus platform above, eliminating the need for them to pass through Schiphol Plaza. This will reduce congestion and streamline the flow of rail passengers through this busy concourse. The staircases have been designed with comfort and safety in mind, like the staircases that BAM Infra previously constructed between the rail platforms and Schiphol Plaza. Features such as fire-resistant glazing, fire doors and special wall finishes will be incorporated with a view to ensuring safety.
The construction of the new staircases forms part of Schiphol’s wider Multimodal Hub project. With a 30 per cent rise in rail passengers expected by 2030, it represents a much needed effort to increase the capacity of Schiphol’s railway station. ProRail and Schiphol have joined forces on the station’s redevelopment, with the aim of boosting the capacity of Schiphol Plaza, the rail platforms and the bus station while raising safety and quality standards.
