News  ·  10 JanuaryBus station renovation has begun

The bus station at Schiphol will be renovated in the coming years. The current bus station is due for replacement and will be expanded. The updated bus station will have a direct connection to the train station. Temporary bus stops are currently being prepared so that bus transport can continue during the renovation. These stops will be put into use in spring 2025. Buses at the temporary stops are in a different location than travellers are accustomed to. Schiphol will direct travellers to the correct bus stops by way of signage and information at the stops. The first phase of the renovation started in October, with BAM as contractor. From 2027, public transport passengers will be able to use a new bus station, with a large covered bus platform and three new stairs to the train platform.

Arjan Bieshaar, Schiphol: ‘The landside accessibility area of Schiphol is an important and dynamic hub where different modes of transport come together. To make this area as pleasant as possible for our passengers and employees, we are investing in the renovation of the bus station.’

Peter Silvis, Amsterdam Transport Authority: ‘After years of preparation, the time has finally come. We are pleased that, as a transport authority, we can build this new bus station together with Schiphol and ProRail. It will be a complex operation because the buses will continue to run, but we are confident that we can complete this job together with our transport providers.’

Harro Homan, ProRail: ‘With the start of the MHS Bus sub-project, we are taking the next step in improving Schiphol Airport station,’ says Harro Homan, regional director of Randstad Noord at ProRail. ‘This unique station, where various transport flows converge, plays a crucial role as a multimodal hub. The project contributes to faster travel and less crowds at Schiphol Plaza, and thus strengthens the connectivity and accessibility of this important national and international junction.’

New bus station

The new bus station will be one large, covered island platform with 20 bus stops, creating more space buses. There will also be more space for passengers to wait comfortably for the bus. After the renovation, transferring between bus and train will be easier. Three new stairways will directly connect the bus station to the train platforms below, enabling passengers to transfer directly between train and bus. Check-in points will be located around these stairways. There will also be a new bicycle shed with space for approximately 500 bicycles, where travellers and employees can park their bikes. The surrounding roads will be redesigned and connected to the new bus station. The renovation of the bus station at Schiphol is a collaboration between the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, Schiphol, ProRail, NS, and Amsterdam Transport Authority (Vervoerregio Amsterdam).
