Lounge 1 is getting a complete make-over

When you fly to a European destination, you enter Lounge 1 after security. There, you can do a spot of shopping and grab a bite to eat before your flight. Travellers who have been to the lounge recently will probably have noticed that it is being redeveloped. There’s quite a bit of scaffolding and hoardings there at the moment.

A much-needed upgrade

There’s a good reason for this renovation: Lounge 1 is very busy. The number of people travelling in Europe is increasing rapidly and this is expected to continue over the coming years. That’s why this project includes adding some extra square metres to the lounge. When it’s complete in 2025, Lounge 1 will have gone from 19,000 to 24,000 metres squared.

An even better experience

Those additional square metres will create a wider lounge. It’s currently rather narrow, and arriving, departing and transferring passengers often intermix. That not an ideal situation. Fortunately, everyone will soon have enough space to walk around thanks to this upgrade. We’re also expanding the range of shops and food & drink establishments – 23 new concepts will be introduced. And we’re making some of the existing facilities larger, including the Food Court. You’ll soon have even more choice. All in all, you’ll have an even better Lounge 1 experience.

Three different zones

The make-over isn’t only about making more space. Lounge 1 is also getting a new, clear layout. There will be three areas, all different in terms of use of colour and material. You’ll be able to find your way more easily as a result. Where the lounge begins is the Welcome/Goodbye Zone in nice, natural colours. Adjacent to the windows out of which you can see the planes will be the Relax Zone. This area has a simple, calm feel to it. It’s a place to unwind (with a coffee and sandwich perhaps). In the middle of the lounge is the Explore Zone – ‘The Cloud’ – with shops. It’s going to be a striking location, partly because the lighting changes colour and intensity throughout the day.

Lounge 1 open during renovation

Lounge 1 will remain open during the renovation. We really need the space due to the large numbers of travellers. We are going to do our best to limit the inconvenience as much as possible. That is why we are doing the work in phases and, if possible, at night. If anything has to be done during the day, we’ll ensure that we limit the nuisance as much as we can. It requires a bit of patience, but the results will be worth it!
